Stops Sun Damage and Colour Fading
Stops Bending or Curvature of Watercolour Paper
The first step to finding your perfect frame is visiting our store, or email us with the size of your watercolour painting and any other requirements you have.
Our framer, Greg Mahoney, will assist you to design a frame that specifically suits your painting. You can have as much or as little input in the process as you desire. We only use the best materials available to preserve your work, as well as create a unique visual display.
We will also walk you through any additional options to enhance your work. You have the options to choose your mat board size and colour, glass type and core backing.
Your frame will be made for you at our factory in Melbourne CBD. This process usually takes 3-5 days. Above all, our framing craftsmanship ensures that your certificate will be a lifelong treasure. In addition, we only use acid free products that help prevent your work from deteriorating over time.
Your frame will be ready for collection from our store, otherwise we can deliver it straight to your home or office. Your piece will arrive complete, with a hanging cord attached. This means that it will be ready to hang and you can attach it to your walls as soon as it arrives.

Our Tasmanian Oak collection is one of our most popular ranges. It features earthy tones and natural timbers, making it an ideal everyday frame that can be adapted to multiple interiors.
The collection features eighteen styles. This includes width options of 2cm, 4cm and 6cm. The oak based finish of this range also comes in varieties of tan, mocha, beige and dark beige. In addition, these frames are environmentally friendly and sourced from sustainable Australian forests.
We understand the time, effort and long hours you have put into your watercolour painting. Showcase and preserve your hard work by getting it framed.
Watercolour is a sensitive medium that needs to be treated properly. Unlike oil paintings, any mark on your watercolour piece can quickly ruin all your hard work and be impossible to remove. By putting your watercolour piece behind glass, it will be kept safe from any accidents while protecting it for years to come.
We would suggest keeping a gap between the watercolour piece and glass. This is because glass can be damaging for the paper and end up harming your piece. If your watercolour painting touches the glass, this may also cause a build up of moisture, which can also be damaging. To avoid this, we use an acid free mat between the painting and frame. This creates space between the watercolour piece and glass.
You should also pick a glass that will protect your piece from any Ultra Violet (UV) light or sunray damage. We offer a wide variety of options, including Tru Vue Museum Glass, Tru Vue Conservation Clear and Tru Vue Anti Reflection. We also offer glass alternatives to meet shipping needs across Australia. In particular, we provide Plexiglas, which is known as the most durable plastic available.
If you choose not to get Ultra Violet (UV) resistant glass, it is of upmost importance that you keep your painting away from the sun. Watercolour is highly sensitive to sunlight and may quickly alter your piece.
Extensive and High
Printing and Framing
We have carefully selected our products from across the world, establishing a high quality collection with over 1000 frames and 60 mat board options. While continuing to expand our range, we have maintained the best standard of materials.
With our wide selection of colours and styles, you will find the perfect frame to complement your piece. You can come into our Melbourne store at any point to browse the frames in person and to receive expert advice about what would best suit your painting. Otherwise, you can start browsing our online frames catalogue, or check out our framing showcase for inspiration.
We suggest choosing a frame that is wide, flat and wooden. The simplicity of these frames complement the watercolour paintings instead of distracting from them. The frame you pick should never wash out your watercolour by being too bright or strong. However, what you choose comes down to personal taste. While a wooden frame may be the perfect option for some, gold or black frames may be a firm winner for others.
Regardless of the frame you choose, it is most important to choose a colour scheme that suits your painting. If the colours clash, it can distract from your piece and take away from it’s imagery. The matboard will also add to the paintings visual appeal if chosen correctly. When picking your mat, a good rule of thumb is to pick a secondary colour that is featured in the watercolour painting. This can help highlight the main tones in the piece while ensuring that the mat does not distract from the artwork.
Ask our expert staff if you need help in choosing the right colours for watercolour paintings.
Mahoneys Framing has provided art framing services for businesses around Melbourne for over forty years. Above all, we pride ourselves on servicing a wide range of clients. Mahoneys Framing completed printing and framing for 15 of WeWork’s images. This was an urgent request, which was put in only days before their opening launch on Bourke St. After printing, we carefully framed each of these 100cmx100cm prints with our Tasmanian Oak range.
We are proud that our effort has been recognised by WeWork, who say they “could not recommend Greg and his team from Mahoneys Framing more highly.” WeWork also invites anyone who is interested in our services to browse the framing work at their company in Bourke St. So, drop in now and be inspired.
