We often put our most valued artwork or photograph in frames as a way of showing admiration for the art or artist, showcasing our skills, or it could be that the artwork holds a special moment that we enjoy reminiscing about.

Accidental splashes, sunlight, extreme temperatures and fingerprints are just a few of the reasons that can cause damage to your treasured artwork. That is why protecting them with a high-quality frame is a good idea so you can enjoy your artwork and photographs for a long time.

At Mahoneys Framing, our Master Framer is equipped with over 45 years of experience in art and framing, handling each artwork, photograph, memorabilia, and family heirlooms with utmost care and making sure that they come out just the way the customer imagined it.

Tip 1 – Protect your Photos with the Right Picture Frames

Framing is an art itself and choosing the right picture frames can enhance the overall look of your art piece. It is recommended to consider the durability, size and color of the frames. To ensure that your photos are protected, the frames should be of high quality so that it doesn’t break after a short period of time. Also, it is a great idea to get custom picture frames with the right size of your artwork or photographs. Custom frames are made specifically for your pieces so it is not too small or too big. For the colour, choosing a moderately contrasted color from your artwork or photographs often helps in enhancing the aesthetic look of your artwork and setting it apart from everything else in the room.

Besides the frame itself, the right frame materials protect your photos and other valuable artwork in the long run. Artwork on paper like prints, drawings, or photographs is more susceptible to fading which is why choosing an acid-free matboard, backing boards, and conservation glass covers with at least 70% UV protection is a good choice in protecting the vibrancy of your pieces. The conservation quality of UV protected glass and acid-free materials is exceptional in preventing fading and reducing yellowing caused by chemical burning.

Tip 2 – Preserve your Photos with the Right Framing Glass

Not all frame glasses are created equal. Most ready-made frame glasses are of low quality and often do not have UV protection against sunlight. To make the colours look vibrant, it is recommended to use frame glass covers with UV protection such as conservation clear glass and 70% UV protection glass.

Museum glass is unmatched with its amazing clarity and uncompromised protection. This type of glass eliminates reflections and blocks up to 99% of UV rays and is hailed as the highest level of conservation which is an excellent choice for vintage photos, photographs, limited edition prints, original works of art, posters, sentimental items, personal mementos, family heirlooms, keepsakes and souvenirs. It is also the most durable type that offers less hassle in cleaning away dust, dirt, or fingerprints. Other UV glass covers which are also a good option to pair up with your custom frames are our 70% UV protection glass that protects your artwork from any discolouration and fading.

Tip 3 – Secure your Photos with Matboards
A mat board within a frame is another way to secure and preserve your artwork. One of the many useful functions of matboards is that it keeps a space between your artwork and the glass, keeping the surface of the photograph or artwork to stick directly onto the glass. Matboards also give a professional finished look, making your pieces stand out more.

It is a must to choose acid-free matboards as it prevents discolouration and colour bleeding, making them an excellent solution for protecting your valuable and sentimental art pieces.

Tip 4 – The Right Backing Board
Backing boards play a significant role in preserving your artwork as it protects your pieces from dust, dirt, and moisture. It also provides a rigid surface behind your piece, giving you that neat and finished appearance at the back of the frame.

Depending on your required size, there are different types of backing boards you can use such as foam core backing boards or MDF backing boards. MDF is the most cost-effective backing solution and is most often used for heavy and very large pieces of artwork or photographs. Foam core on the other hand is lightweight and non-acidic perfect for medium to small-sized frames. Foam core backing is commonly used for valued pieces where discolouration and fading are a concern.

Tip 5 – Choose a Safe Display Area
Once you have decided on all the materials to use for your custom framing, finding the best location to display it comes next. It is recommended to keep them away from doors or windows that often get too much sunlight exposure or a place where there is high humidity such as your bathroom or the kitchen area. For households with little children, it is advisable to place your framed artwork away from your children’s reach. This is to ensure safety as toddlers tend to be adventurous in nature and often love exploring their environment.
